Reuben J. Kaufman – August 5, 2017

Reuben J. Kaufman, 86, of Sugarcreek, Ohio passed into the Lord’s presence on Saturday, August 5, 2017 after a long battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. He was born on September 29, 1930 in Lovington, Illinois to Jephthah and Rebecca (Miller) Kaufman. On October 18 1956, he married the former Elva Miller of Millersburg, Ohio who survives.

He was a minister in the Beachy Mennonite Church for many years. He was a missionary in Belize, Central America several times and spent 2 years in Liberia, Africa as a missionary pastor. Reuben worked as an electrician and refrigeration specialist for a number of years. In recent years he was a driver for Choice Books and did Amish Taxi service.  He recently commented “I am blessed that I have been able to serve in the kingdom of God.

Surviving in addition to his wife are 5 children: J Mark (Anna Ruth) Kaufman of Sugarcreek, Judy Kaufman of Berlin; Joy Elliott of Canton; James (Erma) Kaufman of Millersburg; Mary Jean Kaufman of Sugarcreek; brothers Dan (Anna) Kaufman and Valentine (Martha) Kaufman; and sister in law Emma Kaufman all of Illinois. Surviving are grandchildren Douglas (Laura); Jeffrey (Whitney); Nathan (Karen); Eric (Tina); Anika; Andrew; Matthew; Michelle; and Melody; along with 7 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Katie Miller; brothers Andrew; Amzy; and Noah, and a son-in-law Vernon Elliott.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, August 8, 2017 from 1-4 and 5-8. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 10 AM with Minister Philip Miller officiating.  Calling hours and funeral will be at Messiah Fellowship Church, 5237 SR 557, Millersburg, Ohio. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.
