Nick McWilliams reporting – A county road east of Bolivar will have periodic closures for the next few weeks.

County Road 103, also known as North Orchard Road, is expected to be closed from today until October 25th from the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. for work along the edges of the pavement.

Tuscarawas County Engineer Joe Bachman says that work is being done to prepare for a widening project next work season.

“We’re going to be cutting trees and moving ditches back and extending berms. Basically preparing for a contract project which will take place next construction season. We’ll have a contractor in to actually do the pavement widening.”

County workers are leveling the side of the road and making the necessary changes before work commences next year.

Bachman adds that projects much like this one are done in an effort to lower accidents.

“It’s always safety. Basically, if you look at any kind of statistics, if you widen a traveling lane, say, from 10 feet to 12 feet, you typically, on an average, reduce accidents by about 25 percent.”

Bachman adds that following a high number of accidents along CR 103, the county was awarded a safety grant to fund the project due to the nature of the work.

No nighttime closures will affect traffic, but all vehicles except for school buses, emergency personnel and mail delivery will not be permitted during the posted hours.
