Robert Dean Cookson, Jr., 76, of Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018, at The Inn at Northwood Village in Dover, Ohio, following a period of declining health. Born October 31, 1941 in Dennison, he was a son of the late Robert Dean Cookson, Sr. and Daisy Charlotte (Francis) Cookson Rothrock. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Gladys and Russell Cookson who helped to raise him after his father was killed while serving in World War II. He was twice widowed, having lost his wives, Patricia Cookson and Judy Hartsfield-Cookson.
Bob was a 1960 graduate of Midvale High School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps and Navy where he was a Master Chief Petty Officer. He worked for the New Philadelphia Police Department and the Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office for a number of years. He was a Ham Radio Operator and talented musician who played the steel guitar in the River City Band at the Pick In Palace and the East Coast Country Band. He also loved to ride motorcycles.
His surviving family includes his children, Tim (Suzy) Cookson and Darla Carlisle; stepchildren, Thomas “Dean” (Debbie) Hartsfield and Vicki Hartsfield; grandchildren, Jamie Carlisle, Kelsey (Ryan) Hill, Katie Cookson and Emily Cookson; great-granddaughter, Charlee Hill; several step-grandchildren; sisters, Mitzi Domingue and Carol “Kay” (Ron) Heavilin; brother, Michael (Meribeth) Rothrock; and stepfather who raised him like his own, Rev. Richard (Carol) Rothrock.
Family and friends are invited to call at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5. A graveside service with military committal service will be held on Friday, July 27, at 11:00 a.m. in Sharon Moravian Church Cemetery at Tuscarawas.
