Nick McWilliams reporting – With deer season nearing its second full week. The Ohio Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to watching out for active whitetails.

Starting on September 28th, the archery hunting season will last until February of 2020, while youth gun season is scheduled for November 23-24th, before full gun season runs from December 2nd through the 8th and the 21st through the 22nd.

During this period, deer are active across the state, potentially causing problems for drivers, according to ODOT District 11 Public Information Officer Lauren Borell.

“With it being deer season, we remind motorists to maybe take it slower. Especially on those back roads. Those more rural routes. Because you’re going to see an increase in deer over the next four weeks, and we just want you to stay safe out there.”

Deer are active throughout the rut period, which occurs roughly during the early stages of the archery season into the end of October and early November.

According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, 75 total deer were harvested as of October 1st, with state numbers at 3,138.

In 2017, over 18,000 crashes involved deer in Ohio.
