Sheriff’s Office Issues Scam Warning

<p>Michele Spring Reporting:

(Tuesday, September 11, 2018) Tuscarawas County, Ohio – The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous reports from area residents who have been targeted by scammers.

Sheriff Orvis Campbell said the caller claims they could face arrest for serious allegations.

“Saying you haven’t paid your taxes and saying if you don’t pay immediately you’re going to be arrested. They change the wording slightly but in the end when you call them back, that’s what they’re after. They’re going to get you to pay some sort of fine to avoid arrest. They usually ask you to mail some type of card or to Western Union money from one location to another.”

Campbell said the number being used behind the calls is (425) 287-6721, but he also stressed to keep in mind that this number can change at any moment.

“People need to remember that the IRS will not call you, law enforcement will not call you and tell you if you don’t pay money you’re going to be arrested. On our part, as law enforcement, that’s extortion. We’re most certainly not going to demand you to pay anything over the phone, it just doesn’t work that way.”

Sheriff Campbell adds they will do their best to investigate the matter but it is likely a number that will be difficult to trace because of its origin.

Residents should hang up or just ignore the message.
