Nick McWilliams reporting – The 2020 application period for the COPS Grant is now open, and the Uhrichsville Police Department hopes to capitalize on the funds.
The Community Oriented Policing Services department was established by Congress in 1994, and has distributed over $14 billion since then.
Chief Vince Beal relayed the opening to council during their last meeting, adding he will be working with his staff to meet the proper deadline.
“We have to apply for it prior to, or by March 11th. So we’re going to start working on that and apply for one additional officer, which was approved by council in July or August. We’re going to move forward with that and see what happens.”
The three-year grant pays 75 percent of the wages and benefits for an incoming officer, under the condition that the department would make every attempt it could after that period to retain the recent addition.
Beal has discussed on multiple occasions the need for more officers on duty in Uhrichsville, with call numbers steadily rising, including 300 more calls from 2018 to 2019.
