Walter Eugene “Hambone” Hammond, 74, of Uhrichsville, passed away at his home while surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, December 6, 2016. Born September 28, 1942 in Dennison, he was a son of the late Walter Hunt Hammond and Helen Marie (Brokaw) Hammond.
A lifelong Twin City resident, Gene was a 1960 graduate of Uhrichsville High School and member of Grace United Methodist Church in Uhrichsville. After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy, he returned home to a long career in the local claypipe industry, having been employed by Superior Clay, U.S. Concrete and Larsons Clay, as well as Nazionale Gulf Station in Uhrichsville. He was a former member of the Uhrichsville Moose and Eagles who enjoyed hunting and fishing.
On July 18, 1964, Gene married the former Constance Ruth Kauffman who survives him along with their children, Timothy, Holly and Jeffrey Hammond, 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, John (Mary) Hammond, Mary (Chuck) Melzer, Bonnie (Pete) Maurer and Thomas (Debbie) Hammond, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Taye Garbrandt Tinney; grandsons, Timothy Hammond and Cody Cox; and sister, Susan Hammond.
Services, officiated by Rev. Larry Malterer, will be held at 1pm on Friday, December 9, in the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison with visitation 4-7pm on Thursday. Interment will follow in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to his family in care of the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home to help defray the cost of his final expenses.
