(Thursday, August 09, 2018) Tuscarawas, Ohio – A fifth pool of mosquitoes in Tuscarawas County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
The Tuscarawas County Health Department has been conducting surveillance of mosquito activity throughout the county since late spring.
Director of Environmental Health Caroline Terakedis said officials were notified Tuesday of two pools that tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
“We found two additional West Nile Virus positive pools of mosquitos. One was at the Sharon Moravian Church in the Village of Tuscarawas and the other was at the Tuscarawas Community Memorial Park, also in the Village of Tuscarawas.”
The first positive mosquito pool was located in Warren Township, two were located in Uhrichsville, and the other two were found in Dennison.
The Health Department will be responding to the positive pool by following the Centers for Disease Control guidelines. Beginning Monday, August 13th, spraying will occur more than once within a two-mile radius of the positive locations.
It is also recommended that horse owners contact their local veterinarian to have their animals vaccinated against the West Nile Virus.
