Woman Dies in Flash Flood

Michele Spring Reporting:

(Sunday, June 10, 2018) New Philadelphia, Ohio – An elderly woman’s body was found in a field near her home on Echo Lake Road in New Philadelphia after flash flooding occurred Friday evening.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell says deputies were notified Saturday morning by a neighbor who was concerned for 82-year-old Doris Jenkins.

“From our observations at the scene, it appeared that she had gone out to check on some animals, specifically she had some goats, and she must have been taken over by the water.”

Sheriff Campbell adds that Jenkins’ property had a small creek that had swelled over from the rapid rainfall. Jenkins’ body was found face down in a field near her home.

During Monday’s Tuscarawas County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Joe Sciarretti took a moment to say a few words about Doris, who had worked previously at the Juvenile Probate Court.

“I guess she was saving her goats, so our prayers go out to her family.”

Sheriff Campbell states officials aren’t positive what time Jenkins went outside.
