Nick McWilliams reporting – The Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank is kicking off their biggest fundraising event of the year this evening, while bringing attention to the issue of hunger in September.

The annual Taste of the Pro Football Hall of Fame starts at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and features former Ohio State star and NFL Hall of Famer Cris Carter as the guest speaker. Tickets are still available online at

Vice President Shelly Hinton says that those in attendance will get a chance to participate in a Q&A format with Carter.

“He will be sharing his story, memories from the glory days when he played football. And our guests will be able to enjoy a nice seated meal with delicious food and beverages.”

The event serves as the largest fundraiser put on by the foodbank each year. Auction items can be bid on during the event, as well as online.

Additionally, Hinton notes that September is Hunger Action Month, and with the effects of the ongoing pandemic still being felt, the problem of hunger is potentially even more prevalent this year.

“It sure has been a difficult year and a half for many. And I think here at the foodbank over different periods of time we saw our lines grow longer. During the peak of COVID we implemented an on-site distribution here at our facility and foodbank to help create greater access.”

According to Hinton, one-in-seven people in the foodbank’s eight-county area could struggle with hunger this year, with one-in-six children potentially affected.
