Arloene F. Howenstine 103, of Bolivar, died Saturday August 28, 2021 in her residence. She was born April 13, 1918, in Strasburg, the daughter of the late Frank and Ruth (Schumacher) Hartline. She graduated from Strasburg High School, attended beauty school, and opened and ran a beauty shop for several years in Bolivar. She married Glenn Howenstine in 1942, and after his return from World War II, together they ran Howenstine’s Grocery Store in Bolivar for 36 years. Glenn died in 2005, after 63 years of marriage.

Arloene is survived by sons Ned G. (Barbara) Howenstine of Burke, Va, and Ted D. (Marcia) Howenstine of Bolivar; granddaughter Jennifer Howenstine of Burke, Va, and brother Dean Hartline of Massillon. A brother Dale Hartline and a sister Wanda Churchill, both of Strasburg, preceded her in death.

Arloene was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Bolivar for over 70 years. She was a volunteer at Hennis Care Center in Bolivar for many years. She will be remembered as a revered community member and a warm and loving mother and grandmother.

Family graveside services will be held at Ft. Laurens Cemetery in Bolivar with Rev. Mike Pozzuto officiating. A celebration of Arloene’s life will be held at a later date. The Lebold-Smith Funeral Home in Bolivar is handling the arrangements.
