Nick McWilliams reporting – A local trust fund has put new minds in a good place to learn with books, thanks to a New Philadelphia native.

The First Steps to Literacy: Books for Babies Trust fund was first created by Betty Lou Honaker in 2008, with the goal of connecting as many newborns with books as possible.

According to a release, 90 percent of the funds brought in each year are used for immediate purchases, with the remaining amount going to reinvestments for future generations.

The trust provided 330 books for babies born at Union Hospital, highlighted by 38 of which were bilingual.

Donation information to the fund can be found at www.tusclibrary.org/support.
