Mary Alice Reporting – A long-time employee in the Dover School community has made the decision to retire early in July.

Superintendent Carla Birney’s contract currently runs through July 31, 2023, and she notes that it was the right time to make this choice and announce it to give the board time to find a replacement.

Her career spans 35-year and it started in 1985 when she student-taught.

“I started my career as a kindergarten teacher in the fall of 1989 and I was a kindergarten teacher for 9 years. I then became the elementary curriculum director and then from that position, moved to the assistant superintendent and then to the superintendence.”

Birney adds that the major moments and parts of school life she will miss is the kids and watching them enter the district as kindergartners.

“With high hopes and anticipation of what school is going to be for them, Then I love watching them as young adults, in high school level, and find their passion and then grow into young men and women, who eventually leave us, and go on to do even greater things.”

She notes that she is ready to travel with her husband and also spend more time with family.

In the meantime, the Dover School Board of Education will decide on the best way to post the superintendent position and find the best candidate.
