Nick McWilliams reporting – With school safety a topic being widely discussed once again, Dover officials are discussing future plans.

School districts are widely considering further safety implementations at districts around the country, following the recent events in Uvalde, Texas.

Interim Mayor Shane Gunnoe opened his remarks at the latest meeting, noting that Dover City Schools are looking at potential changes for increased security.

“The city of Dover is committed to assisting with the safety of Dover City Schools and students. With that in mind, members of the School Safety Task Force met last Thursday, including [Police} Chief [Paul] Bantum, Councilwoman [Sandy] Moss, Lieutenant Brian Stewart from the fire department, and myself. Along with members of the Dover City Schools to work on strategic planning for their ongoing safety needs.”

Some $117 million is planned from the state level for grant funding to districts for increased security measures.

Recently, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also signaled his intent to sign a recently passed bill that would drop training requirements to allow teachers to carry firearms to just 24 hours.

While no specifics were discussed as to what potential upgrades for security could be coming for Dover, Gunnoe said that he was planning on updating council soon on potential changes.
