Neal’s presentation will tell the story of John Glenn starting with his birth in Cambridge\, Ohio through his childhood in New Concord and into adulthood where his horizons widened to include the final frontier. John was a prolific figure in American and Ohio history whose impressive service history within the U.S. Marines and his education at Muskingum College\, which included flight training at New Philadelphia’s own Harry Clever Field\, allowed him to become one of the nation’s first astronauts but he didn’t stop there. He then served as Ohio’s longest sitting senator before retiring to once again return to space as the oldest astronaut at the time. Towards the end of his life\, he looked towards the future generations and established the Ohio State John Glenn School of Public Affairs along with lending a hand in establishing the John & Annie Glenn Museum and the National Veterans Memorial and Museum. Hope Neal is the Assistant Director of Operations at the Museum Association of East Muskingum who manages the John & Annie Glenn Museum for Ohio History Connection. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in History from Muskingum University in 2022 and is a month away from completing her Masters in Library and Information Science through the Luddy School of Informatics\, Computing\, and Engineering at Indiana University Indianapolis. She has spent the past six years working in the public history field as well as volunteering for Cambridge Dickens Victorian Village and the Muskingum County Community Foundation. This program will be held on Thursday\, April 23 at 6:30 PM at the Dover Public Library\, located at 525 N. Walnut Street. The event will be held at the Southeast Ohio History Center in Athens Ohio. Jorma Kaukonen with special guest John Hurlbut are the headliners. Bruce Dalzell and Myron Hart will also be playing. There will also be a silent auction\, and light refreshments will be provided. The doors will open at 4:30 PM and the show starts at 6:00 PM. All proceeds will go to Boots on the Trail and the Ornery Vets Collective to assist in their efforts to help more Veterans. Boots on the Trail provides free ecotherapy to fellow Veterans in a unique way. They cut brush and remove trees on trails in State Parks and National forests. They do this with hand tools to promote conversation and camaraderie. Such activities replace the community\, structure and purpose they lost when Veterans left the Service. Tickets are available at: Bootsonthetrail.org/jamminforvets
