Nick McWilliams reporting – A crash involving an open-top horse-drawn buggy and vehicle resulted in two fatalities Wednesday evening.

According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, 34-year old Paul Wengerd was guiding the buggy with a passenger, his four-year-old son, on State Route 83 around 6:15 p.m.

The buggy was suddenly struck from behind by a Jeep driven by a 28-year old Millersburg woman, ejecting both Wengerd and his son.

The 34-year old was pronounced dead at the scene, while the child was taken to Pomerene Hospital before being flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. The child later died from his injuries.

The sheriff’s office said that the woman was not injured, and turned around to return to the scene after going a short distance southbound on SR 83.

The crash remains under investigation.
