Nick McWilliams reporting – Through the Ohio Department of Public Safety Ohio Traffic Safety Office, the Tuscarawas County Health Department received $35,000.

The federal funds are through grant programming, and 2021 marks the sixth year the Safe Communities program has received those dollars.

The program provides educational materials about the dangers of distracted driving and operating motor vehicles under the influence. Some 6,000 people were reached in Tuscarawas County at 25 events during previous grant years.

Last year, the county saw 11 fatal crashes with 14 fatalities, with impaired driving and non-compliance with seatbelt laws two of the top contributors.

So far in 2021, the county has seen seven fatal crashes leading to eight deaths.

Grant funds will be used to increase public awareness and education about safe driving habits.
