Homer David Hammel, 95, of Gilmore, Ohio, passed away at his home on Monday, November 15, 2021. Born January 11, 1926 near Gilmore, Ohio, he was the son of the late Winfield Clayton and Wilma Josephine “Erma” (McCoun) Hammel.

Homer proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radioman while stationed in the Asiatic-Pacific theater. He was employed by Belden Brick, Heller Brothers, and Reeves Steel before spending 30 years at I. F. Manufacturing prior to his retirement in 1986. He was a talented musician who enjoyed playing the fiddle and guitar for square dances, and he loved growing roses. Homer was a longtime member of West Union United Methodist Church at Gilmore.

On November 27, 1947, Homer wed Wilma Deane (Milburn) Hammel with whom he enjoyed over 61 years of marriage until her passing on March 12, 2009. They are survived by their daughters, Barbara (Roger) Adams and Susan (Phil) Robson; son, Greg (Patricia) Hammel; grandchildren, Brian, Heather Ann, Troy Michael, Tony, Don, Misti, and Bobbi; and great-grandchildren, Brianne, Heath, Addison, Jordyn, Logan, Kayla, T.J., Kailey, Kyle, Alex, Eric, Laci, Lexi, Jena, Dakota, Chance, and Paitra. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, John Ernest “Johnny” and David Jeffrey “Jeff” Hammel.

Pastor Garry Marlatt will officiate an 11:00 a.m. funeral on Saturday, November 20, at West Union United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the adjoining churchyard (West Union Cemetery) beside his beloved wife. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the R.K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to West Union United Methodist, Salvation Army, and Community Hospice.
