Melvin “Mel” Miller, 83, of Sugarcreek passed away on Saturday, June 12, 2021 at Majora Lane Nursing Home in Millersburg following a short decline in health.

He was born in Sugarcreek on September 1, 1937 to the late Monroe B. and Malinda (Troyer) Miller and married Janice Gasche on October 23, 1965. She survives.

He was the original Mel of Melway Paving and then went on to retire from Hercules in Canton. Following his retirement he drove bus for Belle Valley for many years. He enjoyed golfing and bowling over the years.

He was a member of Walnut Creek Mennonite Church.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two children, Darlene (Brent) Stein of Millersburg and Ryan (Jenny) Miller of Shelby Twp., Michigan; 3 grandchildren, Caleb (Cassie Cunningham) Stein, Deacon Miller and Grady Miller; his brother, Freeman (Amanda) Miller of Sugarcreek; his sister-in-law Shirley (Miller) Badger; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his 4 sisters, Edna Miller and Clara Yoder and infant sisters, Niva and Lydia Ann; and 2 brothers Henry Miller and Lloyd (Bena) Miller.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM at Walnut Creek Mennonite Church with Pastor Ernie Hershberger officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Friends may call on Tuesday from 5-8 PM at Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek.
