Mary Alice Reporting – With twenty-two candidates competing, the current Miss Clayland is getting ready for the Miss Ohio program with the first preliminary night on Thursday, June 16th.
Emma Rose Lewis, who is a graduate student of Kent State University with a BA in Broadcasting and Mass Communications, took home the local title, in October, after impressing the judges with her vocal talents and social impact initiative, Safe and Sound Now: Consent Education and Provider Support.
That initiative is something she has talked about in her travels as Miss Clayland and will continue going into the state scholarship competition as it is personal for her, since Lewis was attacked in 2019.
“And so I thought, this person didn’t receive my consent, and that’s the message I want to bring to people from toddlers all the way up to your grandparents age, is that consent guides through our entire life. I use the FRIES model. The acronym stands for freely given, reversible, informed, enthusiastic, and specific.”
With the Miss Ohio program just a couple of weeks away, Lewis says there is a lot of ongoing preparation work.
“Asking me questions about, literally, anything and everything that could possibly come up, so a lot about current events, stuff about my personal life, stuff about my talent, anything like that.”
As an opera singer by trade, she is also preparing for the talent portion as she will sing the Queen of the Night aria by Wolfgang Mozart.
Lewis adds that the scholarship program has helped her continue her pursuance of higher education as she looks forward to achieving a Masters in music and then continuing on to get a doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance with a specialization in vocal health, combining her enjoyment of music and science.
Miss Ohio 2022 opens in downtown Mansfield with a parade on June 12th and the ten semi-finalists will re-compete ahead of the crowning on Saturday, June 18th.
The winner will represent the state at the Miss America competition later this year.
