Mary Alice Reporting – A sinkhole appeared on a New Philadelphia street and the service department is working to fix the issue.

Excavation started Wednesday morning to find out the cause with City Service Director Ron McAbier noting that at the nearby intersection, there is a sanitary and a storm manhole and there was a failure at the connection points.

It appears the continued flow over time destroyed the mortar joints of the brick.

“Slow starts going around one and then two and before you know it three bricks just come out. Right there at the base, has a void there.”

McAbier explains the next step is to excavate around the area and they’re looking at putting a temporary concrete patch.

“At the base there where it ties in. Tie us over until we get two more manholes ordered because the proximity of the sanitary is only like 13 inches away from it so to excavate one out of there and not excavate both would be next to impossible.”

A cost estimate is currently unknown but per manhole, it can be up to $8,000, which does not include other materials.

The roadway, 2nd Street NE, between E. High and Fair Ave., will remain closed for the next couple of days and a camera will reveal if the temporary repair is sufficient.
