Nick McWilliams reporting – For the first time in decades, New Philadelphia will update zoning codes to make approvals for new construction and expansion easier.

Mayor Joel Day said in a release that Compass Point Planning, a zoning group out of the Cincinnati area, will be working to help update the codes for the city.

While addressing some concerns, the new codes will also help in preventing hold up on projects and a sometimes lengthy appeals process, according to Day.

“With the economic growth that’s occurring in the city, now is the time to look at our zoning code and make revisions that will help sustain the growth. The zoning audit will also assist in the city planning commission with new developments and the redevelopment of properties like Joy/Howden and those in the downtown area.”

The public is urged to participate to assist with a survey to help provide a rough outline of general perceptions of how the city is growing.

A public meeting is also planned for input from the community to assist Compass Point.
