Nick McWilliams reporting – Following a fire at the Waterworks baseball fields late last week, a councilman offered his appreciation for the work of city safety services.

A fire was called in on Friday for a shed behind one of the dugouts, which was destroyed in the blaze after someone apparently lit it on purpose.

Councilman Mitch Pace, who is also the New Philadelphia Youth Baseball League President, says that they lost equipment in the fire, but further damage was prevented by the fire department.

“There was a portable pitching mound in there, some rakes, and a tamper for the mound. It could’ve been a lot worse if we lost the whole dugout. Fortunately, no one was hurt. And the fire department responded really quick. Because, from the picture I saw, it was on fire and had pretty good flame to it. So they saved the dugout.”

Police are still searching for a suspect and are asking anyone with information to call them at 330-343-4488.

The baseball league currently has a GoFundMe page set up online for rebuilding the shed, and fixing some of the damage caused to the dugout on Field 5.
