Nick McWilliams reporting – With the acquisition of a new property for their bus garage and maintenance building, New Philadelphia Schools is asking for the extension of city services for their purchase.

The district recently purchased a property at 764 State Route 416 SE in Goshen Township, just outside the city limits.

Mayor Joel Day says that the city is asking the district to find a way to be annexed into the city for easier access and cheaper monthly bills.

“Otherwise, the water and sewer rates would be two and a half times the rate for in-city users. We agreed that if council agrees to the extension, the city would provide the materials necessary, such as pipe and manholes, but the school district would have to pay the cost for engineering, design, and construction.”

District officials were taking that information to the school board to discuss the next move.

Previously, the bus garage space was being rented, with the property purchase leading to a savings for the district, according to Superintendent Amy Wentworth.
