A current councilman was voted in unanimously to fill the open Council President seat in the City of Dover.

The position became available after Shane Gunnoe was successfully voted into the mayor’s seat after Richard Homrighausen was suspended pending outcomes of ongoing court proceedings.

The Republican Party Central Committee met at headquarters Thursday evening to vote on the president seat. Chairman Joel Day notes that Justin Perkowski was the only person who submitted an application by the deadline.

“Made a unanimous selection and we wish Justin the best. He has some challenges as president of council and he has our support. We’ll do our best to try to get him acclimated to that position.”

As part of his duties as an At-Large council member, Perkowski is president pro tem, but even having conducted a few meetings, Day says that the transition to full time will need an acclimation period.

“Being the president of council is a little different. You only vote when there’s a tie and you conduct the meetings, assign committees and legislation to committees, and those type of executive duties, so he’ll have to get acclimated to that.”

The president term ends in 2023 and at that time, if he chooses, Perkowski would need to file with the elections board to run again.

Due to other obligations, Perkowski was unable to attend the meeting. The next step is to file his resignation from Dover council and the Central Committee will issue further details on an application period for the At-Large seat.
