Mary Alice Reporting – Wednesday was the filing deadline for potential candidates or for entities wanting an issue on the primary ballot.

The next step in the process is verifying the signatures and ensuring requirements are met, with Tuscarawas County Board of Elections Director Gail Garbrandt noting that not all precincts will be open in May.

The Board will officially certify the ballot on February 13th, as she says there will be no statewide issues, a few tax levies are expected, and mayor races will be of importance.

“We are going to have some exciting races in Dover and Uhrichsville for sure and I’m sure voters will be looking at that, and we expect the turnout will be higher in those two areas.”

The last day for voter registration is April 3rd. Changes are coming for early voting hours and Garbrandt explains the election board expects to receive a directive from the Ohio Secretary of State next week.

“The change is that we’ve always had early voting the Monday before the election from eight to two. There will be no more voting on the Monday before the election, so the six hours that we would have had are going to be reallocated during that last week.”

Registration information is available at www.boe.ohio.gov/tuscarawas.

Other actions leading up to the May primary include poll worker training in March. Anyone interested in serving on Election Day can contact the local board at 330-343-8819.
