Bob was born on September 14, 1950 in Dover and was a son of the late Carl and Pauline Levengood Welling. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Don Welling and his sister, Debra Tschantz.
Bob was a 1968 graduate of Strasburg High School where he excelled as an athlete; he was a member of the 1967 state championship basketball team and was an outstanding football player. In recognition of his talents, he was inducted into the Strasburg High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his achievements in football and with the 1967 basketball team. Following his graduation, he proudly served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War; and with the Army National Guard during Operation Iraqi Freedom. When Bob returned home from Vietnam, he was employed at the Timken Co. in Canton where he remained for almost 40 years, having retired in 2017. He was a member of the First Christian Church at Dover and the Strasburg American Legion. Bob was a hard worker, but in his spare time, he loved following his grandchildren with all of their sporting activities.
A loving husband, father and grandfather, Bob will be sadly missed by his wife of 34 years, Deanna Hess Welling whom he married on January 25, 1986; children, Billie Jo (Jeremy) McCune of Dover, Joshua Rogers of New Philadelphia; sister, Linda (Mark) Netro of Canton; grandchildren, Alisha Walker and Brennan McCune.
Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover. A service celebrating Bob’s life will be held on Monday, January 4th at 1:00 pm in the First Christian Church at Dover with Pastor Josh Robinson officiating. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday. Because of Covid-19, the church will require all attendees to be wearing masks and to social distance.
