Mary Alice Reporting – An Ohio Senator and colleagues are working to ensure future infant formula and other essential nutrition supplies will not be in short supply.

The Protect Infants from Formula Shortages Act is essentially a safeguard on product availability from manufacturers.

Senator Sherrod Brown says the current formula scarcity creates a burden on parents.

“Ensure this never happens again. That families have access to the essential formula they need. We want to require manufactures of infant formula to let us know when they face problems. Sometimes they’re safety problems of their own creation.”

Once the legislation goes through the proper procedures and if ultimately signed into law, Brown notes, if a problem is reported, it will allow the government to move in quickly and get inspectors into the plants.

“And make sure they can fix the problem they have. If they wait and wait to notify or don’t even notify the public and the public just sees a lower supply, it’s often too late. Early in the process, early in the stage of their problem we can often come in and help them fix it.”

A report will also allow other infant formula manufacturers to scale up their production until the issue is resolved at the other plant.
