Nick McWilliams reporting – A scam targeting Stark County residents is sparking a warning from the prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutor Kyle Stone’s office issued that warning this week, noting a male caller is claiming to be from the Stark County District Attorney’s Office, an entity that does not exist.
The claim is a bad check was written by a family member, and a specific amount of money is needed to correct the situation immediately, or law enforcement will arrest the individual at their home.
In some situations, the caller has stated correct bank information from those who are targeted, and sounds convincing.
The prosecutor’s office says that they will never contact a resident demanding a payment, especially through a money transfer service or gift card.
Anyone targeted is asked to contact authorities, along with the prosecutor’s office and the Federal Trade Commission.
