Mary Alice Reporting – An exhibit at the Dover Public Library will provide a look into a different culture through student-taken pictures.

Through Our Lens: a Glimpse at Our Latino Culture will be up throughout January and represents images that were captured by youth attendees at the 2022 Adelante Arts Camp.

Sherrel Reiger, an instructor at the Tuscarawas Arts Partnership sponsored camp, explains this opportunity gives Latino students the chance to learn about the arts and last year’s theme was photography.

“They got their cameras and they started learning how to use them and how to get better pictures. We didn’t limit them of course but we tried to encourage them to take pictures of their lives, as Latino Americans, and how they interact with their family and with the community.”

Many of the pictures stand out but Reiger says she personally enjoys the images that focus on the family dynamic.

“What they do as a family to maintain their traditions from their parent’s culture or even from their culture, as some of them were born in Guatemala and others were born here, and was just great to see how much they came to appreciate and have that desire to teach other people what their lives are like here.”

The Dover Library is holding a special event, Monday at 6:30 pm, where Rieger and Madi Westfall will talk about the summer camp.

The photographs taken by the ten students will be on display in the library’s community room through the end of the month.
