Mary Alice Reporting – The Ohio Department of Health reports that Tuscarawas County has surpassed the state average in suicides.

Data shows that, for the county, the suicide rate per 100,000 population is 16.6, which is higher than the rate for the state of 13.8.

This week is Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week, bringing about an opportunity to have a conversation, take action, and change the perceptions around mental health.

Empower Tusc has a new committee, whose purpose will be of focusing on sustaining positive mental health solutions across Tuscarawas County and bringing awareness to suicide prevention.

According to the World Health Organization, as many as one in six U.S. children ages 6-17 have a treatable mental health disorder such as depression, anxiety, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Additionally, half of all mental health conditions start by 14-years-of age, but many cases go undetected and untreated.
