Nick McWilliams reporting – The Uhrichsville Fire Department ousted a fire on Cross Street Monday during a tornado warning in the area.
Crews were toned out around 4:50 p.m. to a call for smoke being seen from the back of a home.
Chief Justin Edwards says that by the time crews arrived, flames were seen from the back of the structure and severe weather had started setting in in the city.
“It was kind of a unique fire since we fought it during the tornado warning. It was my first time for that, but we got the job done. The weather was definitely hampering our operations. At one point, it was hailing and raining so hard that I couldn’t tell what was water or smoke or ice. It was pretty crazy for a little bit.”
According to the chief, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, and all occupants of the home escaped with no injuries.
A damage estimate was not immediately available and a cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
Edwards was thankful for the quick response time by all departments given the homes close proximity to other buildings.
New Philadelphia, Dennison, and Warwick Township assisted on scene.
