Conotton Valley Union Local is under new leadership.

The Board of Education voted on Monday to approve a 5-year contract with John Zucal, current Conotton Valley Elementary Principal.

This is Zucal’s first year with the district after holding positions locally at New Philadelphia for 12 years and Immaculate Conception for over 20. He says when the opportunity came about to join the district, it was a great fit for him.

“I thought it would be a wonderful change for me. A change that would lead to me being able to work with people who share a lot of the same values I do. The ideas of work ethic and grit and commitment. It became very clear that this was the place I was to be.”

In addition to his Principal duties, Zucal will serve as Interim Superintendent until July 31st at a salary of $200 per day, after which he’ll assume the full-time position at $130,000 per year.

He’s grateful for the years of service and foundation already laid by the Board and outgoing Superintendent Todd Herman, including the vision and building of the nearly completed Rocket Center.

“There’s going to be tons of opportunities over there as we grow those programs for students to serve what would be considered internships. The development of life skills and soft skills are so important”

Zucal has a passion for servant leadership and intends to lead the district by example and has 38 years of experience.

“I am here to allow people to realize the fullness of who they are and put them into positions to be successful, and so that is one of the most important pieces for me, is to ensure every stakeholder is put in a position to be successful”

Herman was named the Noble Local School District Superintendent on April 19. His final day will be May 9th.
