Mary Alice Reporting –

A grant was awarded to the Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation for further improvements of high-speed internet access.

The ARC funding total is $1,079,000 and will be used for the Tuscarawas Broadband and Workforce Transformation project.

TCEDC Executive Director Marla Akridge says the intent is to reach existing wireless areas.

“Several parts of our rural counties still have underserved and unserved areas for broadband and this grant is just going to be a little snapshot of reaching people that have no or low service internet.”

This will happen by constructing and equipping six wireless telecommunication towers and is expected to service over 10,000 households and 200 businesses.

Akridge is hopeful more government funding will be allotted in the future to further facilitate remote learning, telemedicine, and access to e-commerce.
