A local society will celebrate 55 years of family research on October 7th.

Tuscarawas County Genealogical Society provides a place, at 307 Center Street, in Dennison, for community members to explore their familial history.

President Emma McMannamy notes they offer records from Tuscarawas and surrounding counties, as well as some from Pennsylvania and Maryland.

“Family histories, county and township histories, we have birth and death records, wills, estate packets. Births and deaths in Ohio didn’t start until 1867 and they didn’t have to record them until 1909, so before that we have church records.”

For this Saturday’s anniversary celebration, community members are invited to the Genealogical Society to tour the building and archives and meet with the volunteers.

“The gentleman who will be giving the tours can explain all we have there. Within the library we’ll have tours of our many, many books. We are selling some books at a reduced price that we have a lot of, and we’re having refreshments.”

The celebration will be from 2 to 6 pm.

The library is open on the first and third Tuesday and every Thursday and Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
