Gary John Nelson, 84, of Wooster, formerly a longtime Twin City resident, passed away on Sunday, July 31, 2022, at Smithville Western Care Center in Wooster, after a long period of declining health. Born Sunday, April 17, 1938, in Dennison, he was the son of the late John Eugene and Mary Lucille (Brady) Nelson.

After his graduation from St. Mary’s High School in 1956, Gary began his 35-year career with the railroad, first with the Pennsylvania Railroad and continuing until his retirement from CSX in 1991. In retirement, he was a member of N.A.R.V.E. for railroad retirees. Throughout his life, Gary enjoyed woodworking, and he leaves behind many of his creations – ranging from furniture to figurines to hand-carved muzzleloaders – for his family and friends to treasure. He will also be remembered for his talent with the banjo, having played with the Bluegrass Gospeltones for years, both on the radio and in live performances for area events.

On August 18, 1956, Gary wed the former Barbara Ann West who survives him along with their children, Debbie (Randy) Ellwood, Judy (companion, Billy Tyler) Booth, Patti (Bill) Older, and Greg (Toni) Nelson; 13 grandchildren, including Cory who was his special hunting partner; and 22 great-grandchildren. Gary is also survived by his sisters, Carol (John) Anderson and Ann Altier; brother-in-law, Jim (Tena) West; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister, Karen Nelson; brother-in-law, Dave Altier; and grandson, John Moore.

In keeping with Gary’s wishes, he will be cremated before being interred in St. Mary’s Cemetery near Dennison. A graveside service is planned, and this website will be updated as soon as details are confirmed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
