Nick McWilliams reporting – As residents displaced by the Jaycee Village Apartment fire in late May await the next steps, Uhrichsville officials are set to discuss plans for future emergencies or disasters.
Mayor Mark Haney commended the actions of the Uhrichsville Fire Department for ensuring no residents were injured, and the fire did not spread to neighboring buildings after the initial 911 call on Sunday, May 28th.
During a recent council meeting, Councilwoman Wendy Mann also thanked firefighters for offering pizzas to the displaced residents who were waiting for a shelter or some type of resource to turn to while waiting to get back into their homes.
However, she says that she would like to see some type of game plan in place for the future if a similar situation occurs, to prevent long wait times and confusion.
“Maybe we could have Twin City Ministerial Association sit on this committee. Just different people to come together so that in some kind of a extreme accident or event like this, we can come together as a community and have a plan.”
Some of the involved parties for those discussions include the American Red Cross who provided assistance after the fire, and Organic Church and Pastor Michael Brindley, who are collecting hygiene products and clothing for displaced families and residents.
Uhrichsville is expected to hold a meeting soon to discuss the formation of such a board, along with potentially establishing members and goals.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office has been investigating the incident for a cause of the blaze.
