Mary Alice Reporting – An annual event is back, Friday through Sunday, in the Village of Newcomerstown.

It’s the Cy Young Days Festival featuring a full schedule for each day with tents and concessions, and cornhole tournament registration all opening on Friday at 5pm.

Festival President Ed Gibson says more events will be spread throughout the three-days.

“We’re going to have a laser tag (tent), bounce houses for the kids, there’s going to be booths set up, people selling things. In a small area there’s going to be a lot of stuff setup.”

Gibson notes that the yearly event honors the legacy of Cy Young.

“To see what his achievements actually were. We want people to come and honor Cy Young. He was the first major league baseball player.”

Saturday’s parade steps off at 6pm as participants travel through the downtown area. Lineup is on State Street and onto Beaver Street.

Sunday, at 10am, will be a vintage baseball game played at Cy Young Park and will be a journey back in time, says Gibson.

“They play by the rules like they did in the 1860’s. The ball is different, there’s no gloves worn during the game. If you catch the ball on the first bounce they’re out. If a fan catches the ball in the air and hands it to a player the batter is out also. You’d have to actually see the game to get to understand it with all the rules they had back then compared to what they are today.”
