Durlan R. Kandel, age 85, a long-time resident of Stone Creek, passed away Tuesday, August 22, 2023, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born July 28, 1938, in Holmes County, he was a son of the late Daniel and Alma Sommers Kandel. As a young man, Durlan attended the former Wooster Highway School in Dover and worked on the family farm. He was later employed by the U.S. Ceramic Tile Company in East Sparta, from which he retired.

Durlan married the former Darlene S. Davy, who survives, on January 17, 1963, and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. In addition to work and family life, Durlan trained field trial raccoon dogs for over 30 years. He was a great fan of the Cleveland Indians, and liked to garden – especially growing sweet corn. In retirement, Durlan and Darlene enjoyed spending winters in Florida.

Besides his wife, Durlan is survived by his daughter, Brenda (David) Egler of Port Washington; his son, David (Bonnie) Kandel of New Philadelphia; his grandchildren, Alyssia (Robert) Perrotta, Kayleigh Kail and T.J. Meechan; his great-granddaughter, Ophelia; his sisters, Minnie (Bruce) Riffle of Cataula, Georgia, and Nancy and Jim Schneider of Dundee; his brothers, Robert and Clarence Kandel, both of New Philadelphia; and his nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Durlan was preceded in death by his grandson, Seth Meechan; his brother, Glenn Kandel; and his sisters-in-law, Bonnie and Barb Kandel.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory, Dover, on Friday, August 25, 5 – 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held Saturday, August 26, at 11 a.m., in the funeral home; Pastor David Wing will officiate. Burial will be in Dover Burial Park. Following the committal, there will be a lunch in the fellowship hall of the Dover Alliance Church.
