Joseph E. “Joe” Sayre, a dedicated family man and respected community member, passed away peacefully at his home in Dover on September 1, 2023. Born on November 5, 1928, in New Philadelphia, he was the son of the late Ellis and Myrtle Cook Sayre. Joe was also preceded in death by his brothers, Verl and Roy Turney Sr., and his sisters Dora Richardson and Wanda Linard.

With a remarkable career spanning over three decades, Joe retired from the Timken Company at New Philadelphia in 1986. He brought great dedication and commitment to his work during his 32 years of service.

Joe’s commitment to serving his country was evident through his military service in the Army during the Korean War. He demonstrated courage and resilience on the battlefield and was recognized for his bravery with prestigious honors including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Faith played an important role in Joe’s life, and he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dover.  Additionally, Joe was an active member of the New Philadelphia American Legion. 

Above all else, Joe cherished his family. On May 26, 1953, he joined hands in marriage with Millicent Shepherd Sayre, who brought immeasurable love and joy to his life. Together they created a loving home filled with warmth, laughter, and support for one another.

Joe was a devoted father to their children Bradley (Debbie) Sayre of Dover, Harold Sayre and his companion Cindy Moss of Virginia, and Allan (Steph) Sayre of South Carolina. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and provided unwavering guidance throughout their lives.

In addition to his immediate family, Joe is survived by his sister Carol Fantine of Dover. He also leaves behind cherished memories with his grandchildren Joseph C. Sayre and Alec Sayre, as well as step-grandchildren Ryan and Brandon Dotts and Jilaine Kellner.

Joe’s kind spirit, loving nature, and zest for life will be dearly missed by his extended family, including many nieces and nephews who were blessed to have him in their lives.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 5th starting at 11:00 am in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Dover with Aaron Linard officiating.  Interment will be in the Ridgecrest Memory Gardens where the New Philadelphia VFW will conduct military graveside services.  The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 to 11 am.  Those wishing to express their fondest memories of Joe may do so by visiting the online obituaries link on the funeral home’s website.
