Gwen Rummell Reporting –

A commercial vehicle crash left US 36 closed Thursday.

At approximately 10:53 am, a 2022 Ford Transit van was traveling eastbound when it ran a red light. The van driver, a 46-year-old from Croton, Ohio, struck a 1996 Freightliner semi making a left turn.

The semi’s fuel tank ruptured, spilling approximately 100-150 gallons of diesel fuel onto the roadway. The enclosed trailer was not loaded.

The van driver was transported by ambulance to Aultman Hospital and the semi driver was transported by ambulance to Union Hospital. Both drivers sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The Newcomerstown Police and Fire Departments and a hazmat team assisted the Ohio State Highway Patrol while the Ohio Department of Transportation redirected traffic.

The crash remains under investigation.
