Thomas J. Umpleby, 78, of Canton, Ohio, formerly a 20-year resident of Bridgeport, Ohio, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023, at Sprenger Health Rose Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation in Massillon, Ohio, following a period of declining health. Born April 1, 1945 in Columbus, Ohio, he was a son of the late William Bruce and Clarice Nellie (McGuire) Umpleby. Tom proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force for 3 years during the Vietnam War.
Tom grew up in the Columbus area and was a 1964 graduate of Reynoldsburg High School. He then attended Kent State University and was a resident of Kent for nearly 20 years. He spent much of his career as a railroader, having begun with Penn Central Railroad after returning home from military service. He later was employed by Conrail, and beginning in 1989, had worked for North American Expediting until his retirement. Tom loved that he was able to travel for his job, giving him ample opportunities to enjoy his favorite pastime – photography. In his later years, he also spent much of his time supporting his favorite charities which included St. Malachi’s Catholic Church in Cleveland.
He will be mourned by his surviving family which includes his brother and sister-in-law, Stanley A. and Janet Umpleby; five nieces and nephews, Terry, Tracey, Dawn, Greg, and Debbie; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, W. Bruce Umpleby, Jr. and Hallie Umpleby, as well as a nephew, Douglas, and niece, Cheryl.
Richard J. Lare will officiate a 1:00 p.m. service on Saturday, September 30, at R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home in Dennison. Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home, prior to the funeral. According to his wishes, Tom’s cremated remains will be interred in Uhrichsville’s Union Cemetery on a future date.
