Mary Alice Reporting –
An annual survey found that 92% of participants agreed that youth should never experiment with nicotine products.
The 2023 Community Survey on Tobacco polled over 300 community members about their opinion surrounding tobacco, nicotine, and electronic devices.
Tuscarawas County Health Department Public Health Educator Katelyn Gorius says the results revealed that the community doesn’t want youth to be involved with any form of nicotine.
The survey showed that 81.5% of community members either agreed or strongly agreed that electronic smoking devices should be treated the same as regular cigarettes.
“So, this means that they shouldn’t be able to advertise to kids, that retailers are following the same practices of enforcing Tobacco 21, and school should enforce use of these products the same as they would for using regular cigarettes on school grounds.’
Gorius adds that the health department continues education efforts.
“We work with all school districts on providing classroom education, professional development education to staff, as well as, working with schools to implement an alternative to suspension for nicotine product usage at school.”
Survey results also highlighted that almost 74% of respondents believe that candy and fruit flavorings should be prohibited in nicotine products.
