Mary Alice Reporting –

No person was injured following a blaze that destroyed a home on Stonecreek Road.

The Monday call came at about 7:00pm and responding was York Township Fire Department, along with units from New Philadelphia, Dover, Sugarcreek, and Stonecreek.

York Fire Chief Mark Beitzel says once on scene, they encountered very high heat and smoke.

“It was a two-story wood frame house. Smoke pouring out the kitchen door and also out of the eaves of the house. With the quick response, we were able to knock down the fire and contain it to the interior of the house.”

While the single occupant made it out safely, he notes that several cats did not.

Beitzel points out that, thanks to the holiday, more of York’s volunteers were available.

“We had tremendous response because of the timing of the fire being in the evening. Had it been a workday, we might have only had three or four guys available but in this situation, we actually had eighteen of our own guys available. With the resources from the other departments, we were well staffed.”

He says they encountered some issues due to the type of structure and creating roof vent holes. The blaze started in the kitchen, but a cause is unknown.
