The State Highway Patrol is reporting a relatively safe Fourth of July holiday weekend on the roads locally.
New Philadelphia Post Commander Lt. Johnnie Maier says there were a handful of OVI arrests and a handful of crashes.
“We didn’t encounter anything tragic. We didn’t have to respond to any serious injuries, life-threatening or otherwise fatal crashes in our area, and we didn’t have to handle anything extreme.”
Maier says we are in the midst of what law enforcement calls the 100 deadliest days of summer, where fatal crashes are more frequent. He says stepped-up patrols are helping keep roads safe.
Maier says law enforcement responded to a report of shots being fire out of a vehicle in New Philadelphia Sunday night; however, he says it might have just been fireworks as they found no witnesses, victims, or other evidence to confirm the caller’s story.
