Uhrichsville leaders are closing a pay gap within the fire department.

Council on Thursday unanimously approved 3-dollar hourly raises for captains and full-time firefighters.

Mayor Jim Zucal says the boost is well-deserved and follows a similar increase the department requested for part-timers.

“The union members graciously stepped up and said, hey, we have a contract this year, we can work through this year provided you get the schedule of pay up to where the part-time are.”

Fire captain and union rep Wes Dillon was appreciative.

Before this, Uhrichsville’s full-time firefighters got paid just $15.77 per hour starting out, and the hourly rate for captains was $17.81.

“We’ve been very luck since I’ve been here, since 2008, we’ve had one guy leave. There’s other city’s that’s had multiple people leave, go for jobs for more money, our guys here aren’t all about the money because if that was the case, they could be gone.”

The increase was to go into effect once the union formally approved it.
