Gary Lee Hanni of Dover passed away on Monday, August 26, 2024, surrounded by his family, after a courageous 7-year battle with metastatic breast cancer.
Born in Union Hospital in Dover, Ohio, Gary was the son of the late Clifford and Dora (Turney) Hanni.
He graduated from Strasburg High School in 1963. In 1969, Gary married the former Beverly (Bev) Jones. On October 17th, they would have celebrated 55 years of loving marriage.
For 34 years, he was an employee of The Timken Company, in Canton, Ohio. He retired in 2003 as a supervisor in the Chem Lab. After his retirement, Gary and his wife loved to garden, put together 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles, and enjoyed playing the slots especially at Wheeling Island Casino.
In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by three children, Scott (Sharon) Hanni of Midvale, Wendy (Eric) Swaney of Winston Salem, NC, and Tina (Scott) Wilson of Medina, 7 grandchildren, Cliff (Aliceson) Hanni of Winesburg, Kylie Hanni of Dover, Blake (Derek) Beatty of Hilliard, Kelsie and Cassidy Swaney of Winston-Salem, NC, and Carson and Kyler of Medina, and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Martha Hanni of Strasburg, a sister-in-law Kathie Jones of Gnadenhutten, and a brother-in-law Mike Jones of Tuscarawas.
In keeping with Gary’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. The Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory in Dover has been entrusted with cremation care.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott McGee, APRN Joe Conway, and all the staff at Tri-County Oncology and Hematology for their excellent and skilled care during Gary’s cancer journey. Also thank you to Community Hospice and Park Village Health Care Center for their loving and compassionate care of Gary in his final weeks.
