A gas leak that caused evacuations in a five-block radius in Dennison has since been repaired.

Work continued throughout Tuesday morning and into the afternoon to repair a major gas leak in downtown Dennison.

Fire chief Dave McConnell says a line in front of village hall was ruptured just after 8:30.

“Crews working on the downtown construction cut through an 8 inch main, and it was actively spewing gas, so they had to evacuate about 5-6 block radius, both schools, the administrative office and everything in the downtown area.”

The affected areas were Center, Grant, Sherman, Welch, and 1st through 5th Streets.

McConnell says the leak was somewhat contained early on with a temporary patch.

Businesses closest to the site was evacuated first with communication constantly being kept with the two schools, which kept having no major air readings. Once more information was known about the situation and the leak persisted, the schools were notified and they evacuated.
