Martha Lucille McElhaney, age 92, of 27375 Friendly Ridge Road, Tippecanoe died peacefully Friday, September 13, 2024, in Park Village Health and Rehab Center in Dover.

She was born June 17, 1932 in Guernsey County, Ohio to the late William and Isabelle Anderson McCormick.

Her husband, John A. McElhaney died August 17, 2016. They were married June 12, 1955.

Surviving are two daughters: Linnah (Tom) Hodkinson of Tippecanoe and Carla (Dave) Birney of Dover; four grandchildren: Julia (Vic) Bologna of Dover, Jennifer (Brendan) McKee of Dover, Ben Hodkinson of Tippecanoe and Allison (Aaron) Porter of Dover; ten great-grandchildren: Evan Bologna, Camden Bologna, Finlee Bologna, Cassidy McKee, Miles McKee, Amarie Hodkinson, Emy Hodkinson, Matthew Porter, Samuel Porter, and Joshua Porter; a brother-in-law, Len McElhaney of Forest, Virginia; a sister-in-law, Ruth McCormick of Mansfield; and four nieces and nephews: David (Robin) McElhaney, Diane (Larry) Hull, Kathy (Mike) Worley, and David (Shar) McCormick.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by an infant son, Gregory Alan McElhaney in 1956; her brother, Bill McCormick; her sister-in-law, Marty McElhaney; and her mother and father-in-law, Earl and Ada McElhaney.

Martha was a 1950 graduate of Freeport High School, and a 1954 graduate of Kent State University with a degree in Business Education.

Martha was a member of the Freeport Church of The Rock where she cared very deeply for her church family and was actively involved when able with Bible studies, church dinners and other activities. She was also a member of the former Lakeland Athletic and Band Boosters. She enjoyed being involved in a Londonderry group called the WDAYL Club (which stands for “We Do As You Like”), the Deersville Garden Club, and the Guernsey County Farm Council. She and her husband loved to square dance at Moorefield Community Center.

She was a farmer’s wife and a substitute teacher most of her lifetime at Lakeland High School, and enjoyed being the Yearbook advisor. In her later years she also taught business and computer classes at Belmont Tech North Center and Kent State University Tuscarawas Campus. Martha’s passion was crocheting baby afghans and dish cloths as well as making German stars. If you knew Martha, you probably have some. Her family was very dear to her. She seldom missed the activities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Private visitation and a service will be held for the family with Pastor Sandra Cappel officiating. Burial will be in Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport.
