A proclamation was approved, by the Tuscarawas County Commissioners, ahead of October being breast cancer awareness month.
Based upon data from the Tuscarawas County Health Department 2023 cancer profile, an average of 73 new cases of breast cancer and 17 deaths are recorded each year in the county.
Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital President Dr. Thomas Rogers says the health center’s role in raising awareness is critical.
“Being one of the highest cancers in women, in the United States, in fact it effects one in eight women, making sure that we do the screening it accrues that chance for survival because if you have early treatment, early recognition is really important for us to be able to recognize that.”
The hospital also strives to accommodate all, no matter their scheduled, says Breast Center Coordinator Raena (rain-ah) Beans.
“The first opening of the day is at 7:20 in the morning and we finish up at 7:00 in the evening, and we do offer appointments on Saturday’s. It’s an every other Saturday from 8 to noon.”
Throughout October, community members are encouraged to Paint Tusc Pink by creating displays and placing a designed sign, available through the hospital, in their yard.
